Take a walk on the Wild Side.
The Entourage certainly slept well with a bit of a late start in the glorious sunshine this morning. But after a quick breakfast and consultation of the internet, the party was off into York. Our target this morning was the "Jorvik Viking Experience". This had been picked by the junior members in the planning stage and we feared that it might be a bit - daft. However the long line of older persons, many grey hairs, at the door might give lie to that point. Build on the site of the Coppergate dig from the mid 70's the venue used many of the finds from the site to introduce Viking life around a thousand years ago. From this they created and animatronic ride, which was actually not at all bad, even if Marcus still claims to smell rotten cabbage on his shirt. Beth was greatly enthralled and is still singing one of the songs she heard there.
Looking at our maps and pamphlets, the Entourage had 4 sites to choose from, the Air Museum, the Yorkshire Museum (with Jurassic Marine Reptiles), the National Centre for Birds of Prey and "Deep" and aquarium in Hull. After a short consultation amongst the team it was decided to see Birds of Prey and Deep.
Charlotte was reasonably well behaved on this trip across the flat Yorkshire farm country though at one point we began ignoring her as she tried to send us in the opposite direction to that indicated by the signs for the bird centre. Having found our destination by good sealed roads we did enjoy looking around but the high light was the flying display where the birds were allowed to demostrate their natural flying behaviour. Sorry but my cameraman was not good enough to get shots of the hawk diving down at 80 miles per hour from 100ft up.
The intention then was to go to the Deep. So we made our request of Charlotte and set off. She took us away from the road we had come in on, but being short of time we did not question this. The road turned into somewhat broken and certainly rough concrete paving in from of the grand manor house on whose grounds the Birds of Prey centre sits. This did not bother us. Shortly thereafter the road became unsealed track which whilst unusual is not something Charlotte has not done to us before so we continued on. The track narrowed and lead down a steep hillside to cross a stream by a narrow stone bridge of some unfathomable age. This too is nothing unusual for Charlotte so we continued. Beyond the bridge, blocking our path, was a farm gate. On approaching the gate in was discovered to be locked with a large padlock. Sandra was in hysterics.
This put all our travelling out and already being tight with time to reach Deep, the Entourage decided to leave that for tomorrow and to find our lodgings instead. Having gotten Charlotte to be nicer to us, we discovered that the part of Yorkshire we had been in infact lies a top an escarpment which we descended into the Yorkshire Dales. From here we headed towards Nottingham, and occupied a cottage on the edge of the Sherwood Forest. Here we enjoyed a simple meal of pizza upon the lawn where even as the sun now sets, at 8pm, my secretary now sits typing my dictation.
Quote of the Day.
"She's lying Dad. I can't see anything for all the trees", Beth commenting on her mother's comments about the view.
"But can you see the wood?" , Tony, driving.
"No I can't. There's too many trees.", Beth, enough said.
Drinks of Note.
Well's Sticky Toffee Pudding Ale - a black ale that tastes exactly as advertised. Perhaps not the best pudding ever, but deffinately a toffee pudding.
