Lost in Navigation.

After a continental breakfast, the Entourage headed out into the rain swept Welsh moors within sight of the snow encrusted peaks of Mount Snowdon National Park.

The first target of the day was Beaumaris Castle on the island of Anglesey. This was achieved by crossing the Menai Suspension bridge, built by Thomas Telford in 1826, and then proceeding down narrow winding lanes with oncoming traffic, which this time had a near cliffs, rising on our left and falling away to our right, as an added bonus. Thank you Charlotte.

Beaumaris castle in the rain is still impressive structure and a classic castle with murder holes, arrow slits, curtain walls and round towers. Though undergoing restoration works in parts at present, it was still very enjoyable to wander around.

From here our day became like the weather, dismal. We discovered that despite her propensity to send us on hair raising journeys across near uncharted wilderness (what is the British equivalent of a banjo?) we ourselves do no better when ignoring her advice and just following what looks to be a major road, things which Charlotte seems to avoid, than only end up being narrow sheep lanes that could be familiar to the Romans.

When we again turned Charlotte's voice on she proved unable to find the 3 stone circles or the Roman fort that we had planned to see. And even then when she did recognise a sight her directions left us staring at an empty beach where even the locals did not know of any standing stones.

Thankfully the very helpful gentleman who was out walking his dogs did point us a tiny tea house where we enjoyed Welsh tea. This is like a Devonshire tea but includes marmalade on bread and Bara Brith, a variation on Fruit cake that Tony thought reminded him of his grandmother's date loaf. Sandra had fruit cake with her tea, though it may have contained lead given the weight it had for it's size.

Suitably refreshed, and having no luck finding the sites that they had come in search of, the Entourage called it a day to head back to our lodgings for a chance to take it easy and deal with mundane tasks such as washing. Dinner tonight, as last night, will consist of prepackaged cottage and sheppard's pie as well as lasgne all of surprisingly good quality. Where as last night deserts were various tarts, prepackaged but very good, tonight shall be fresh berries with cream.

Drinks of Note.
Mango Coke-Cola at first tastes a bit like '70s cough mixture but isn't too bad. Beth likes it which may or may not be a recommendation.

Quote of the Day.
"Goddamn it Charlotte!". Sandra. Many times.

The outer walls of Beaumaris castle.
Inside the outer wall.

Inside the Central keep.

Building the castle.

The finished item.
Ready for the Cloister.

Proper compensation for a frustrating day.

  1. I think Charlotte has a Kiwi cousin. The second instruction out of our GPS is usually "Perform U Turn Where Possible". Thankfully, my JPM backup system (Jane plus Map) gets us back on track.

    1. Charlotte hates U turns or any form of back tracking. She'd much rather hear you scream when encountering oncoming traffic on a barely single lane road.
